Apply to School of Communication

Thank you for your interest in declaring a major or minor in the School of Communication at Illinois State University . This instruction sheet is your guide to completing the application process.

Application Form

Step One - Understand the Choices
The School of Communication offers a wide variety of majors and minors that are all sub-sets of the communication discipline. There is no major called Communication or Communications. You need to choose the single program that best meets your needs and interests. The choices are listed on the application form. Visit the School of Communication web page, www.communication.ilstu.edu for additional information.

Step Two - Attend a School of Communication Information Session.  Meetings are held periodically to help students learn more about the School of Communication offerings and application process. Attendance at an Information Session is required for consideration of becoming a major or minor in the School.

Step Three - Complete the Application Form
Choose your desired program and neatly complete all sections of the application form. We recommend keyboarding the form.

Step Four - Write Your Own Essay
Write an essay, not to exceed two pages, describing your career goals and how this program will help you achieve those goals. Check grammar, sentence structure and punctuation since the essay represents you to the Admissions Committee.

Step Five - Construct Your Plan of Study (POS)
You must construct a two, three, or four-year plan of study which shows all required and elective classes you need/plan to take prior to graduation. One-year plans of study will not be accepted. The POS should list each term and all planned classes. To determine pre-requisites and requirements refer to the ISU undergraduate catalog for the year that you were admitted.

Examples of two and four year plans of study have been placed on the Communication web site. School of Communication advisors are not allowed to assist students in constructing their application POS. Advisors will meet with admitted students at a later date to assist them with long term planning.

Step Six - Submit the Application
Staple the three application parts together in the following order: Application Form, Essay, POS

Applications must be submitted to the School of Communication Academic and Career Advisement Center , Fell 450. Forms may be mailed to: Advisement Center , School of Communication, Campus Box 4480, Illinois State University , Normal , IL 61790-4480 .
