9/22/08 - Maria Moore is a new Assistant Professor of Communication. A graduate of National Louis University in Chicago, she has twenty-five years of senior broadcast media management experience. Her research focuses on the holistic fusion of technology and humanity through digital media.

She taught at the Newhouse School of Communications at Syracuse University and at Columbia College Chicago. She served on the executive boards for the Sundance Film Festival and the National Association of Television Program Executives.Moore is an accomplished journalist and producer of television programs and is the recipient of numerous awards, including one from the National Association of Governors for Best Outreach Program in America.For fun, Maria enjoys travel, learning about and collecting wine, and always has a good book or two at hand.

» 11/03/2008 - Associate Professor Stephen Hunt has been named the first recipient of the “Educating Illinois in Action” honor. The honor, presented by the Educating Illinois Coordinating Team, recognizes individuals, offices or programs that exemplify the goals and strategies of the Educating Illinois 2008-2014 strategic plan. Steve has been honored for his commitment to student-centered teaching and for his service to both the University and the local community.
» 11/03/2008 - Steve Hunt, School of Communication, was one of three faculty members are winners of the 2008 College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Service Awards for their extraordinary service accomplishments. Hunt plays an important role in both the School of Communication and the University at large. Until recently he was the co-director of the Communication as Critical Inquiry sequence in the General Education program, and is now Associate Director of the School. He has served on many thesis committees, mentored graduate students, guided research projects, and worked on program assessment. He has been invaluable as one of the team that made Critical Inquiry such an important part of the Inner Core of General Education. Hunt has chaired two departmental search committees, serves on the CGE, and is Co-Chair of the American Democracy Project. His service with the Political Engagement Project and work to bring civic and political engagement into the classroom led to his being named an American Association of State Colleges and Universities/Carnegie Foundation of the Advancement of Teaching Political Engagement Scholar. Hunt also serves on social justice committees, including Illinois Play for Peace and the Living Democracy Committee of Bloomington-Normal.

Megan Houge has been nominated as an Outstanding University Teacher – Category II by the College of Arts and Sciences. Brent Simonds has been nominated for a Teaching Initiative Award from the College of Arts and Sciences.

» George E. Tuttle, Professor Emeritus of Communication, has published his third novel, Saving Maria. The mystery novel interweaves the stories of Maria, a young girl who lies in a coma; and Aaron Worthington and Jeff Spencer, substantial investors in a world-wide wind energy and organic food empire known as SPENWORTH. The story takes place in England, Newfoundland, Australia, and several locations in the United States. “The issues of wind energy and organic food are timely economic and political issues,” said Tuttle. “Saving the young Maria is a timeless issue.” Tuttle is the author of two previous mystery novels, Murder in the Opera House and Death in the Vineyard. Tuttle lives in Bradenton, Florida and in Bloomington, Illinois. He has traveled extensively in the United States, Australia, Canada, and England. He and his wife, Joann, enjoy travel, ballroom dancing, photography, reading, genealogical research, fine wine, good food, and interesting conversation. » 12/01/08 - Peter Smudde is a new assistant professor in communication. An ISU alumnus with bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Department of English, he earned his Ph.D. in communication from Wayne State University. Smudde’s sixteen years of corporate communication experience in industry included a wide range of work in public relations, marketing, advertising, and technical writing. He was formerly tenured associate professor at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
Smudde's articles have been published in Public Relations Journal, Public Relations Quarterly, Review of Communication, Communication Teacher, Communication Quarterly, Visible Language, and Technical Communication. He has two books in press--one is a long-term public relations case study and the other is an edited volume on education as rhetorical action. He is co-author with Dr. Jeffrey Courtright on a new book studying the discourse genres of public relations through rhetorical, linguistic and business perspectives. Smudde and Courtright published their first book, Power and Public Relations, last year.
» 10/20/08 - The School of Communication faculty beat the graduate students 11-5 in softball action at Underwood Park Sunday afternoon. Winning pitcher was Mark Comadena who pitched the entire seven innings and was aided by youngsters and budding stars Matthew Blaney, Ethan Hunt, and Michael Story.

» The 2008 Dean’s Awards went to the following members of the School of Communication: the Outstanding Civil Service Staff Professional award went to Patricia L. Franz; the Outstanding Administrative Professional was awarded to Doug Jennings; Laura M. Trendle Polus, award winning director of TV 10 News, received an Honorable Mention in the Teaching by an Administrative Professional category; and Honorable Mention in the Outstanding Teaching in the pretenured category was awarded to Brent Simonds.

» 8/05/08 - Assistant Professor Isa Botero was recently featured in “Power 360”, a magazine similar to Newsweek or Business week. The article, "50 Brains that Escaped," explains why people from Colombia that come and study in the U.S. do not return back to their country. It poses questions about the education system in Colombia and the lack of support that universities and professors in universities have.To write this article they contacted 50 of the most successful professors of Colombian origin in the US and they interviewed them about their opinions, experiences and likelihood to return to Colombia.
